Model of the citadel of Mycenae, National Museum of Archaeology in Athens. The circuit walls are mostly of 13th century BC date, as is the Lion Gate. Grave Circle A (number 2 on the model), where the Shaft Graves were cut, was only included within the citadel walls during this last phase of expansion, possibly in an attempt to bolster dynastic claims.
